How to Avoid Falls and Injuries When Hiring Scaffolding

Posted on January 11, 2024 by Categories: News

When installed correctly and properly maintained, scaffolding is an invaluable tool for any renovation project. However, working at height always carries a risk of fall or injury. If you are thinking about hiring scaffolding, here are some important steps you can take to avoid unnecessary injuries during your project.

Avoid working at height

Is scaffolding necessary for your project? Although it often seems like the easiest solution, it can sometimes be avoided. This is why a thorough risk assessment before the project begins is needed.

If we carry out a risk assessment for your project and don’t think scaffolding is the right option for your project, we’ll let you know your options.

The best way to avoid the risk of working at height is to eliminate it, so if this is an option it’s worth exploring.

Inspect your scaffolding

You’ll have a scaffolding inspection as soon as it’s erected to make sure it is installed safely and to code. However, if your scaffolding is going to be in use for an extended period of time, you’ll also need regular follow-up inspections to make sure the structure remains safe.

If the weather is bad or the scaffolding is under heavy use, it’s prone to damage or weakening. A regular inspection will pick up on these issues and rectify them before an accident happens.

Provide training and PPE

No one should use scaffolding if they have never been trained on safe usage. Likewise, no worker should be on the structure if they are not wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.

Falls and injuries are significantly more likely if there are untrained personnel on the scaffolding. At Ace Scaffolding, all of our team members are trained, CITB registered and CISRC registered, meaning each person is fully aware of safety protocols.

Keep workspaces clear

This one may seem obvious, but if any materials or tools are left on the scaffolding, risk of trips and falls are much higher. Whenever items are not in use, they should be stored safely where they are not a trip hazard.

When work finishes for the day, the scaffolding and surrounding areas should be thoroughly tidied and made clear to avoid any accidents the following day.

Be aware of weather conditions

British weather is unpredictable and what started as a nice day can quickly turn. If winds are high or rain is heavy, scaffolding should not be used.

Severe weather makes scaffolding dangerous to use and significantly increases the risk of someone falling from the structure or being hit by falling objects.
